Below we have a killer interview from the band DEATH CRISIS. I first met some of these dudes when they played in a band called LIFE CRISIS (another ripping band). Well the singer from LIFE CRISIS moved away and the band DEATH CRISIS was started. I first saw them in San Diego, their hometown. They played a ripping set of vile sounding hardcore. The music was punching you in the face while the singer spit rage into your face. This is a true hardcore punk band in my eyes. They just put out an e.p. that was self-released and it’s a ripper. If you dig the interview try and look them up and pick their awesome new e.p. If you missed when they came through west Michigan either with LIFE CRISIS or DEATH CRISIS don’t miss them with the next CRISIS band… maybe next summer?

 1. Introduce the band and the people involved with this project.

Death Crisis.  Rob Logic-Guitar.   Drew- other guitar.  Dale- Bass.  Adam – Drums.  Alberto – Vocals

2.Ok just you guys just got back from your first US tour thumbs up or thumb down? Good places good bands?

Albert- it was magical.  Adam- thumbs down, I didn’t make any money, I didn’t get laid by anything new.  and the van smelled.   Dale- all I have to say is ‘art from Muskegon’

Drew- Milwaukee, badass place to play.  Not a good place to leave your shit.  Rob- I had fun.  The swimming hole that matt from deep shit took us to in Madison WI was pretty dang awesome.

All- but seriously, almost every show was fun and we met a lot of cool people.  Saw some awesome bands.    We learned that it is all about the small towns.  The best shows weren’t in the big cities. Except Chicago… and Dallas…. and Denver.   Anyone who asks ‘why you want to play *insert small town like Muskegon, Madison Lafayette* can go fuck themselves.

3.Yes small towns!!! I grew up in a small city outside of Buffalo NY and it seemed like we had to always fight for our space and to be noticed by anybody. How did all of you grow up City/small town/village/farm or in the woods raised by wolves?

Drew- LA. (San Pedro)  Orange county… all urban southern California Rob – ‘east county’  (el Cajon) San Diego, kind of smallish. No shows at all…I wish we did.

Dale- rural east san Diego county  (Jamul) Adam – umm I grew up all over the place.  By the time I was going to shows I lived near a big city, Sacramento or the bay area.

Alberta- San Ysidro, a border town.  It was weird.

4.Did any of you get into punk at the time of growing up in these small towns? Alberto who grew up in a Border town was there punk or was punk something you all got into after leaving these places?

Alberta- umm well I was surrounded by gang bangers. And whoever was different was a ‘fag’ actually the way I got into punk was the skaters and a friend who was a DJ.  I would see patches on people in jar high and tell him what records to buy.  I couldn’t buy shit because I grew up in a family of 7.

Dale – I knew 2 kids that were into it, the closest they got was blink 182 or some bullshit like that.   Adam- my brother gave me a tape in 1986, Lafayette la, which had 7 seconds, the meatmen and MDC. And I liked it but I didn’t start really listening till I was older.

Rob- I grew up going to dance clubs because I didn’t like all the opera singing in metal.   I got a minor threat tape and that changed everything.

Drew- I never lived in a small town but riverside had the better shows and record stores.   Lots of backyard shows, there would be some venues but they would get shut down pretty quick.

5.Ok this an interesting time line. What are the times of interest for punk for everybody in the band? It seems like the ages are all over the place. I know some of you are old but how old lets get it straight?

 Alberta- I was 11, currently 38.

Dale- I don’t know when, like 12 or 13, currently 20.

Rob- I’m still not into punk, if it wasn’t for tour I wouldn’t know about any new (or old) bands.  I’d say my sophomore year was when I got my first real exposure–dead Kennedys, currently 37.

Adam- I was 13, currently 31.

Drew- got my first record when I was 12 but didn’t listen to a whole lot till I was 18, currently 33.

6.So you guys come from the ashes of LIFES CRISIS well so it seems with the new name DEATH CRISIS whets the connection? Is LIFE CRISIS STILL a band or is it dead and gone?

Dead and gone is a different band.  ha ha.

Adam- uhhhh I wouldn’t say life crisis was dead, just on life support.  You can’t really keep a band going when the singer lives half a country away.   Sean and I used to joke about the band after life crisis being called death crisis. After death crisis, the next band will be called ‘wife crisis’ we won’t be able to tour and can only practice acoustic on Saturday afternoons.

7.So you guys come off live as being a “fuck you” hardcore punk band. You know the deal angry pissed off get out of my way kind of attitude. Well after talking with Kevin from POSITIVE NOISE and hanging with you guys also reading your lyrics you guys have a lot to say. I heard you guys tried to be as earth aware on tour as possible, and some of you are vegan, which does not follow the trend of today’s hardcore trend. What’s the deal, where do you stand?

Alberta is at a rare loss for words.  Alberta- since we got back from tour I don’t eat land animals anymore….. If I really get into this it’ll go on forever.

Rob- yeah it will.

Alberta- at this point in my life I really need to change myself.  If im going to talk about it then I better do it.

Adam- I’m convinced that the world will turn to shit and destroy itself and I don’t think I make much of a difference with what I do. By not buying in and supporting I feel better about myself.   Animal rights and the environment are the main things I care about.  I’m glad that comes across lyrically.

Rob- I’m a fair weather vegan…more of a freebavore.  I love free food.  I stopped eating dairy on a bet with Adam that seems to be going on and on.  I don’t think I’ll be eating cheese for a long long time.

Drew is a goat.  He can, and will, eat anything.

Drew- I think that it’s difficult to mass produce anything and do it correctly.  I don’t’ have a problem eating meat, but the way they have to produce it is pretty fucked up.  It also sucks that eating healthy turns out to be more expensive.

Dale- I try to learn new things every day, I’ve been a vegetarian for a few years…vegan once and a while.  But all I care about is the music. You can’t change the world unless you change yourself.

8.So on the lyrics note. Each song has a strong message what the one that hits the gut the hardest?

Alberta- broken spirit.  I wrote that when I was feeling like shit. I hadn’t worked in five months and had to go to a meetings and dui classes. Going through a divorce.  I wrote that to lift myself up.  ‘I wasn’t going to lose’  ‘the man won’t keep me down’ hahaha

Dale- que interestante.  The message is just awesome.

Adam – saddam is dead.  I think that was one of the few times lyrics I wrote actually captured what I was trying to say.  How stupid mainstream ‘merican mentality is.

Drew- disillusion.  (Not on the ep but soon to be released)   depicts the times I lived in white suburbia. Irvine.

9.Yes I have to say when I first saw DEATH CRISIS I already knew a few of the people in the band, but then this guy was yelling into the mic and I was like this can’t be the singer they must have a stand alone singer. Then you guys started playing and I was like holy fuck this singer fucking rips. That song Alberto mentioned is a ripper. I just quit my job last week walked out. Punk to me is always being able to say fuck you I’m better then this so fuck off. Did punk give you guys a fuck off attitude? Does it give you an edge on society that you feel nobody else has?

Rob- I don’t’ know if punk gave me a fuck off attitude or an edge or if it was already there inside me.

Alberta- the music helped me with my fuck off attitude, but it was already kind of there.  Even as a kid I questioned religion

Dale- you don’t have to listen to punk to see that everything is fucked.  It helps you realize that there are other people out there that hate the way things work.

Drew- it’s easier to be out spoken about things when you aren’t’ the only one and you have someone that will listen.

Adam- I think, it helped me be more of an asshole but I remember being in 3rd grade and saying to my parents that I didn’t want to say the Lord’s Prayer in school, they called the teacher and I didn’t have to say it.  Punk gave me a ‘give a shit’ attitude rather than a ‘fuck you’ attitude. Or maybe a combo…depends on the topic.    Being 14 I don’t think any other style would help you focus on things.  The only fuck you pop music will give you is a fuck you to being an individual.

10.Dont know if you knew this but in west Michigan we have a huge Christian punk scene. Do you deal with this in your scene or have ever?

 Drew- in Orange County.

 The rest of us- no

 Dale- that’s a paradox.

11.It really is, but since living in west Michigan it’s the norm. So what’s next for DEATH CRISIS splits/full lengths anything?

Adam- that religious thing is not going to squash my dream of buying a house in Muskegon.   I’m convinced that they are trying to keep their utopia secret. Anyway, band- we have enough material for a few ep’s and we aren’t sure if we want to release it ourselves our have someone else put it out.  We are also headed back into the studio soon.  Our touring goal is Europe (or Japan) next year and then to go back out in the US to hit some new places and revisit some from before.

Will say right now Muskegon is a long LOST WONDER. Just like alot of west Michigan so do it we will do a band!!! This is the end guys anything you would like to finish with? Bands to check out or places to play anything really?
